Phenolphthalein is a chemical indicator for quality control of pre-sterilization cleaning of medical devices,
allows timely detection of residues of alkaline detergents and disinfectants on medical devices when controlling their quality in the process of pre-sterilization cleaning.

Phenolphthalein is capable of changing coloration over a range of pH values from 8.2 to 10.8 from colorless to purple.

The solution can be stored in a tightly closed bottle in the refrigerator for 18 months.

Composition: phenolphthalein, alcohol.

Evaluation of the result

• Color evaluation should be carried out in conditions of normal illumination of the workplace under natural (diffused sunlight) or artificial light.
• In the presence of residues of alkaline detergents on medical devices, the surface of the swab or indicator solution is colored pink.
• After the test, irrespective of its results, it is necessary to remove the residues of the indicator solution from the tested items, abundantly rinsing them with water or wiping them with a swab and send them for repeated pre-sterilization cleaning.

The sample is used to control the washing of instruments from residual quantities of alkaline components of detergents and disinfectants.

The set is intended for use in medical and preventive institutions, sanitary and epidemiological stations.

The personnel of the medical and preventive treatment facility conduct self-control of the quality of pre-sterilization cleaning once a day, and the head nurse once a week. The control is subject to 1% of items of each item processed per shift, but not less than 3-5 items. Registration of the results of quality control of pre-sterilization cleaning from surface-active substances is carried out in the journal in form No. 366/u, approved by SanPiN No. 0304-12.

The controlled item is wiped with a gauze cloth moistened with the reagent or 2-3 drops of the reagent are applied to the item using a pipette. For inspection of hard-to-reach places cotton tubes soaked in the reagent are used.

When checking the quality of cleaning of hollow medical devices, the reagent is injected inside the device using a clean syringe or pipette. The reagent is left inside the product for 0.5-1.0 min, after which it is drained onto a cotton swab.

In case of a positive sample for detergent, the entire batch of controlled articles from which the control sample was taken shall be reprocessed until negative results are obtained (rewashing with water).
